DP William Ruto Pays Sh53 Million over Tanzania Mistake

Deputy President William Ruto issued cheques worth Ksh.53 million to compensate families from Kajiado County whose livestock were recently confiscated by Tanzania.

The deputy president on Monday maintained that the affected families who lost 1,325 animals were paid to help them restock their animals and lead normal lives.

Addressing a crowd in Kajiado South during the presentation of cheques to the affected families the DP remarked the move was also geared towards helping the victims maintain good relations with neighbouring Tanzania.

DP Ruto stated: “The government is mindful and has sympathy for the families which lost their animals."

He further added: "It’s also our resolve to maintain our existing good relations with our neighbouring country, Tanzania and this is why we have decided to compensate the families.”

The deputy president also thanked the herders for being patient and exercising humility even after losing their livestock.

Additionally, Ruto urged all the beneficiaries to put the money to good use by restocking their livestock.

He also reminded them to start income generating projects that will have a direct impact on their lives.

The DP also noted that the Government had launched a pilot project on livestock insurance policy in eight counties which will help cushion farmers during dry seasons.

Tanzania’s ambassador had earlier on been summoned to explain why Kenyan cows had been forcibly auctioned after crossing into Tanzania.
