Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Announces New Guidelines on Hiring College Tutors

College tutors without any training on subjects offered by technical institutions will not be hired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), CEO Nancy Macharia has announced.

The CEO explained that the tutors will not be considered for teaching positions with the government even if they hold high credentials.

"Candidates whose training is in subjects that are not in the curriculum do not qualify," she stated.

Some of the graduates blacklisted in the exercise include those who hold a bachelors degree in natural resources, meteorology, forestry, animal husbandry, horticulture, farm machinery, fisheries, theology, journalism and others.

According to the TSC guidelines, in order to teach in a vocational education training institution, the candidate must have a minimum of a higher diploma.

"Applicants with a mean grade of C- in subjects taught in secondary schools and have progressed through certificate, higher diploma/degree qualify for employment in such institutions," the CEO explained.

The TSC official added that those who wished to teach in secondary schools must have attained a minimum of a C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

In addition, the candidate must have a bachelor of education degree with two teaching subjects, a bachelor of science or arts degree plus a PGDE with two teaching subjects or a bachelor of science with education with two teaching subjects.

She further added that the candidate must have taken the two subjects in secondary school except for those wishing to teach agriculture, business studies, home science and computer,

"For business studies and computer one must have attained a minimum of a C+ in mathematics in the KCSE exam," she explained.
