8 Confirmed Dead in Grisly Road Accident at Suswa

Eight people were confirmed dead on the spot while several others were rushed to hospital with serious injuries following a grisly road accident in Suswa, Narok County on Friday.

The accident involving a 14-seater Nissan vehicle and a trailer took place around the Duka Moja area.

The Transline Classic matatu was headed to Nairobi from Kisii before it rammed into the trailer in a head-on collision.

Other reports put the number of those who perished in the accident at 6.

Among those injured and rushed to hospital was a secondary school student.

Circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear with police yet to issue a report.

The crash comes at a time when cases of deadly accidents involving Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) have been on the rise.

Barely two weeks ago, 50 people were killed after a Kisumu-bound bus veered off the road in Fort Ternan, Kericho County.

Among the deceased was former Thika United captain Dennis Lewa.

The spike in accidents sparked a flurry of high-level meetings with the government planning a major crackdown in November to enforce the long-forgotten 'Michuki Rules'.

The operation is led by Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, his Transport counterpart James Macharia and Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet.
