Police Launch Drones in Fight Against Illicit Alcohol

Illicit brewers in Murang'a area face an unlikely adversary after local police, on Wednesday, September 4, added drones to their arsenal.

County commissioner Mohammed Barre, launched the first drone which is expected to carry out surveillance along the banks of river Chania, where the merchants of death are known to stash their brew, The Standard reported.

"Information from the device will be acted upon to ensure the culprits are arrested," Barre stated.

The police report further stated that the majority of the illegal brews sold in Nairobi, Thika and Murang'a counties, could all be traced back to the banks of river Chania.

Murang'a's notoriety in the illegal brewing business raised eyebrows late last year, following an operation that uncovered a vast network of brewers.

Over 37,000 litres of the illicit brew was destroyed in a 100-day exercise that was conducted by the then county commissioner,  John Elungata.

Back on May 23, 2019, four children and their mother were left nursing severe burn wounds after a drum of hot fluid at an illegal distillery exploded, sparking public outrage.

The children from Cheplel, Kericho, were scalded as they slept close to the fireplace where the pot came to a boiling point and burst.

Health Cabinet Secretary, Cecily Kariuki, during a past visit to Nyandarua also blamed the rising cases of homicides and suicide in the Central region on rampant alcohol abuse.

A drone such as this will soon fly the Kenyan airspace. The police in Murang'a county have added this to their arsenal in their fight against illegal brewers
