Kenyans have now established that Barka Restaurant is President Uhuru Kenyatta's favourite joint in Mombasa, according to the frequency by which the head of state has visited it.
On Thursday, January 16, Uhuru casually walked into the restaurant, despite the commotion by residents who were clamouring to get his attention, to enjoy a light lunch.
To take the meal, the president was accompanied by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Amason Kingi (Kilifi), Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a) and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) among others.
On Wednesday January 23, 2019, the president had also visited the joint, with other prominent leaders in tow, for a meal.
Surprisingly, the joint, located on Kibokoni Road in Mombasa Old Town, is just a regular eatery devoid of special customisation as preferred by the rich and mighty.
Its menu contains regular affordable meals, including Slice bhajia that costs Ksh 80 per portion, Chicken biryani that costs Ksh 550 as well as Chicken pilau (Ksh550).
The establishment is relatively cheap as compared to some high-end hotels where food costs as much as Ksh3,000. Villa Rosa Kempinski, in 2019, introduced a gold cup of tea that goes for Ksh5,000.
