Governor Anne Waiguru on Tuesday, March 31, responded to a fresh impeachment motion against her by Kirinyaga MCAs with a scathing attack.
In a strongly-worded statement, the governor termed the impeachment motion as "petty and frivolous", stating that the MCAs were "hellbent on political brinkmanship" by filing a motion to impeach her instead of focussing on the fight against coronavirus.
"The issues raised are so basic that they are an embarrassment to the constitution that they seek to protect and the county that elected these MCAs," read the statement in part.
Further, the governor trashed allegations that she violated the constitution by not making a state-of-county address.
"A casual reading of the law would show that there is no requirement for such an address to be at the county assembly.
“Such an address was given to the county assembly in the first year in November 2018 and a similar one at the Kerugoya Hospital after the then health crisis, given publicly to the people of Kirinyaga on September 12, 2019, and the assembly duly notified,” her statement adds.
Waiguru also addressed claims that she had awarded several irregular tenders.
She noted that the nexus between her office and the tenders were not shown.
"There is not a single indication of personal benefit to me, my relatives or friends. They are just thrown there for publicity and propaganda."
Waiguru alleged that the vehicle claimed to have been bought without a tender was bought under a government framework negotiated by the National Government’s Ministry of Public Works.
She stated that the motion had been filed at a time when employees were working from home and were unable to prepare any defense.
“This is an ultimate travesty.”
In the statement, Waiguru suggested that the MCAs wanted her to concede to illegal requests.
"Everyone knows what kind of frivolous impeachment motions by MCAs are about. I will not concede to illegal requests for tenders and money at whatever price," she concluded.
Waiguru's statement came hours after members of the County Assembly of Kirinyaga laid grounds for her impeachment.
