Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru was on Tuesday, June 9, impeached at the County Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

This is after 23 of the 33 MCAs in the county voted for her removal while only six abstained.

"I can, therefore, confirm that the vote has met the two-thirds requirement to decide on this question. The I's have it," announced County Assembly Speaker Anthony Gathumbi.

The case will now proceed to the Senate for a hearing and the impeachment motion will either be affirmed or nullified.

Only a majority of 24 senators will be required to vote in favour of the motion for it to pass.

Earlier, there was drama as the motion took place when Karumandi MCA Anthony Munene and nominated MCA Lucy Njeri, were kicked out of the proceeding after they objected to their names and signatures being included in the motion.

The MCAs, who are allies of Waiguru, alleged that the lawmakers were forging signatures to have the governor impeached.

“This is not a Kangaroo Court! This is not a kangaroo assembly. We want to withdraw our signatures!” How come people are forging our signatures? I’m not removing our governor. When you raise your voice you are thrown out," Munene stated.

In a statement to newsrooms, Waiguru stated that the MCAs were out to frustrate her administration, adding that the timing of the motion was ill-informed.

"I shall not be bullied. My single and unceasing interest is to serve the people who elected me. All else is vindicated by the Law, the Truth and Justice," Waiguru wrote.

So far, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and Embu Governor Martin Wambora have been impeached by both the County Assembly and the Senate.

Wambora, however, was saved by the courts and is still in office while Waititu ceased to hold office and his Deputy, James Nyoro, took over.
