Marathoner Wilson Kipsang Banned for 4 Years by AIU

Former Marathon world record holder Wilson Kipsang was on Friday, July 3, hit with a four-year ban for violating rules by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

In a statement, the global body noted that its disciplinary tribunal had banned the runner for four whereabouts failures between April 2018 and May 2019.

The athletics body also faulted the runner for tampering by providing false evidence and witness testimony.

The ban will be effective from 10 January 2020, the notice read.

Kipsang was also ordered to contribute a sum of 3,000 GBP which is equivalent to Ksh398,452 which were the costs incurred by the World Athletics body.

"The athlete's results from April 12, 2019 until the date of the provisional suspension on January 10, 2020 shall be disqualified with all resulting consequences including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points and prize and appearance money," the tribunal ruled.

Kipsang's claim for damages incurred was also dismissed.

The tribunal's decision is appealablea the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) with the deadline for filing an appeal set at 30 days from the date of receipt of the decision by the athlete.

Kipsang is the former world record holder in the marathon with a time of 2:03:23, which he set at the 2013 Berlin Marathon.

His record was broken by Eliud Kipchoge with a time of 2:01:39, set on 16 September 2018, at the 2018 Berlin Marathon.

Kipsang has had an impressive record in the 42km race over the years, bagging several titles.

The father of four is a two-time winner of the Frankfurt Marathon (2010 and 2011) and has also won the London Marathon (2012 and 2014), New York Marathon (2014), and Tokyo Marathon (2017).  

He is also a bronze medallist in the marathon at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
