The weekend of Saturday, July 18, was marred with a case of preaching water and drinking wine after the police arrested Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja.
That was after the senator, who also served as the chairman of the Senate ad-hoc Committee on Covid-19, was accused of flouting Covid-19 rules after he was found drinking at an establishment identified as Ladies Lounge along Dennis Pritt Road in Nairobi at 1 a.m.
Unlike many other leaders, Sakaja took full responsibility for his actions stating that everyone was capable of making mistakes.
He went ahead to resign from his chairmanship of the Senate committee on Monday, July 20, promising to "pay the full consequence of the law."
"I also want to say that I resign from the ad hoc Committee on Covid-19 which I have been chairing," he added.
Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of high-ranking leaders who have either been accused or actually arrested for flouting Covid-19 rules.
1. Mutahi Kagwe.
In April, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe was accused of flouting Covid-19 rules barely a month after his ministry put them in place.
During one of his daily Covid-19 pressers, Kagwe coughed right into his right hand against a directive urging Kenyans to cough into a tissue or into their elbow,
At the same time, he also handled his face mask in manner that dictated that it needed to be disposed off immediately.
Kenyans on Twitter did not take his actions lightly at the time since enforcement of the then-newly-constituted rules by police was still in high gear.
On June 14, there was uproar after Kagwe delivered the Covid-19 briefing in Nyeri County sorrounded by residents and leaders clearly disregarding social distancing rules. Kagwe would even make light of the matter as he tried to pass the message across that his audience needed to take social-distancing seriously.
2. Oscar Sudi
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi set tongues waging on Saturday, July 18, when he flouted almost all the rules from the Ministry of Health while addressing and interacting with mourners at a burial service in Kabenes, Uasin Gishu on Friday, July 17.
The Jubilee MP was seen shaking hands with mourners and not maintaining social distance. He was also not wearing a mask despite the Ministry of Health issuing mandatory guidelines on protecting oneself once in public.
3. Kipchumba Murkomen
In April, Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen found himself at the center of a Twitter firestorm after he was accused of flouting Covid-19 rules.
In a photo that went viral, the senator was seen addressing a crowd of victims of landslides in Wewo and Sambalat areas in his county.
What was of concern was the fact that they were crowded together and none of them was wearing a face mask at the time.
4. Francis Atwoli
Towards the end of May, after several months of the country steering clear of politics as Covid-19 pandemic effects bit, COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli hosted a luncheon at his home in Kajiado.
Videos and photos that emerged from the event depicted a breach of social distancing guidelines.
Some of the MPs who attended the event, incuding Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, paraded themselves for a press briefing without donning a face mask.
The meeting, attended by more than 40 leaders breaching two rules, one requiring no gatherings exceeding 15 attendees and cessation of movement after some MPs flew from as far as Western Kenya to attend the event.
5. MP Benjamin Gathiru
Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi was arrested in April along 18 others while drinking at a pub in Ruai.
The legislator was taken into custody for flouting the national directive to social distance, as the country fought to tame the spread of Covid-19.
The MP was among the first lawmakers to be arrested for breaking the Covid-19 rules.
6. Battalion of MCAs
Since the Ministry of Health issued Covid-19 directives, several MCAs have found themselves behind bars for flouting the rules
In April, three MCAs in Kisii were arrested alongside four other people after they were caught at Embassy Resort in Nyakoe during the curfew.
They were found drinking by officers on patrol.
In Nyeri, three MCAs were arrested in the same month after police raided a residential house where they had converted into a club.
