A Look into Govt's Affordable Housing Units [VIDEO]

The government through the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure Housing, Urban Development and Public Works is almost fully completing the Nairobi Affordable Housing Project in Ngara.

This will be the first project to be completed after being initiated by the government with its construction commencing back in May 2019.

The housing project in Ngara has 1,370 units comprising of one, two and three bedroom houses, and targets low and middle-income earners.

The Standard

Ministry of Housing Communications Advisor John Kaplich revealed the pricing range of the housing units.

"The project is targeting low-income earners, people earning below Ksh. 20,000 are the ones who will preferably go for the one-bedroom units costing Ksh. 1.5 million.

"There are people earning below Ksh. 50,000, who we recommend should go for the two-bedroom units costing Ksh. 3 million," he explained. 

A three-bedroom house measuring 60 square meters will cost Ksh. 3.5 million with a similar house measuring 80 square meters attracting Ksh. 4 million.

The houses have an ample parking space with social amenities that include a running track, shopping centre, clinic and kindergarten.

All housing units are set to be completed by December with other houses set to be constructed in Shauri Moyo and Starehe consisting of 8,000 units while Pangani, Jeevanjee Jabavu and Railway City are underway that will have 23,100 units.

The units were put up by China State Construction Engineering in a 7.9-acre parcel formerly owned by the government where 48 standalone bungalows constructed during the colonial period stood.

Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary (PS) Charles Hinga revealed that the allocation of houses will be done based on gender equity and diversity.

Individuals interested in buying Affordable Houses under AHP will first have to register on the affordable housing portal (bomayangu.go.ke).

All applicants will need to be a citizen of Kenya with a valid national ID number meaning that applicants will have to be at least 18 years of age.

After completing the application process, interested buyers will be required to pay a deposit of 12.5%.
