UPDATE: The Council of Governor on Saturday, October 17, issued a statement after Narok Governor Samwel Tunai was involved in a helicopter accident.

COG Chairperson Wycliffe Opraranya stated that the governor survived the crash and was receiving medical attention at Narok Referral Hospital.

"We request the people of Narok County to remain calm as the doctors attend to the Governor. The Council of Governors wishes Governor Tunai and the other affected passengers a speedy recovery.

"We hope that he will soon be on his feet and ready to go back and serve the people of Narok County. We assure you, of our unwavering support during this period of recovery," he stated.


Narok Governor Samwel Tunai was on Saturday, October 17, involved in a helicopter crash in Melili, Narok .

The county boss survived the incident and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention together with three other occupants.

A correspondent in Narok confirmed that the county head was travelling to a burial ceremony for the late Paul Lepore at Olenkipejus village in Melili, Narok County when the incident occurred.

"The helicopter had just taken off and had to crash land moments later after developing a mechanical issue," a source told Kenyans.co.ke.

The chopper's rotors were damaged in the crash but it was unclear what led to the helicopter mishap.

The accident attracted a huge crowd who rushed to offer assistance to the occupants.

Area Senator Ledama Olekina confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that he had spoken to the governor who was in good condition.

Governor Tunai had on Friday, October 16, held a consultative meeting with amission team from GIZ Kenya, which centered on aspects of a technical corporation with Narok County.

"Kenya has always had a great development partner in the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has been supporting the Government of Kenya with various initiatives in the focal areas of sustainable economic development," he stated.

Incidences with helicopters, though rare have been reported as on August 10, a chopper assigned to Health CS Mutahi Kagwe developed mechanical issues.

According to initial reports by the Daily Nation, the aircraft was scheduled to ferry the CS from Kericho to Nairobi. However, the pilot was forced to cancel the flight plans following the technical glitch.

CS Kagwe had spent the last weekend touring the Western part of Kenya checking up on the level of Covid-19 preparedeness across various counties in the region.
