Three Members of Parliament have been unable to leave Kapedo, Turkana County for fear of an attack by bandits following the killing of a GSU commander on Sunday morning, January 17.
Among those stranded include: Turkana East MP Mohammed Lokiru, Turkana South MP James Lomenen, and Turkana Central MP John Lodebe.
Reports indicate that the legislators had gone to Kapedo to discuss matters of insecurity.
Speaking via phone to a local media house, Turkana MP Lokiru narrated the events that led to the death of the GSU commander.
He pointed out that the attack came after the peace meeting. The first batch of police officers, who left the meeting through the Baringo route, were ambushed by bandits.
This, according to Lokiru, prompted the GSU boss and other officers to rush to the scene to provide reinforcement. Unfortunately, before arriving at the scene the GSU encountered another ambush by the bandits where the officer was shot dead.
Lokiru called on Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya to pursue the culprits and bring them to book.
He noted that he and two other MPs were stuck at the Kapedo trading centre and could not risk traveling back to Nairobi.
The report comes days after a man was instantly killed and several injured after bandits attacked the village.
Insecurity in the North-Eastern region has been causing concern for residents who live in fear of constant attacks by bandits.
Natembeya had declared war on the youth engaging in banditry attacks.
The commissioner stated that the bandits had been put on notice by police who would not relent in the pursuit of the criminals.
On matters of illegal firearms possession among the locals, Natembeya confirmed that the government had embarked on a disarmament program to flash out the criminals.
