A former street mother in Nairobi has had her happy ending nearly seven years after KTN featured her plight.
Jedidah Kawera hit the waves in April 2014 when the Mombasa road-based station's TV crew aired her plight as a street mother with the zeal to return back to class.
At the time, Kawera had just delivered her one-month-old child and was living on the streets.
"I hope to finish my education because I only had one year left," she narrated, during the interview, noting that it was among her top dreams.
Seven years later, the mother of one has graduated with a Diploma in Social Work and looks forward to pursuing a degree.
"My daughter was still very young, I think she was about one month old. I was still in the streets and that was when I was interviewed by KTN.
"Despite the fact that I had a kid, I still had a dream that one day I will manage to finish my studies and make something good out of my life," she stated.
Dressed in a black graduation gown with a blue collar, Kawera was nearly moved to tears narrating how she went through hardship to complete her studies.
After her plight was aired, a foundation dubbed Love in Deed, which helps street urchins, offered to help educate her.
When she resumed her studies, the organisation helped mend her relationship with her mother who took care of the child while she attended school.
"Society will always judge you but if you manage to make something out of yourself, they won't judge but will be proud of you. They will even forget you were on the streets," she added.
Friends who knew her described her as a go-getter for once she set her mind on something, she would ensure that she achieved it.
A representative from Love in Deed Foundation highlighted the importance of organisations intervening to help revamp the lives of street urchins with Kawera as proof.
"There is a need for somebody to be involved not just through the education process of the child or youth but also in terms of mending the pains or wounds that happened when the child was separated," he stated.
The graduation ceremony took place at the Deliverance Church in Eastleigh.
