Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Sunday, August 8, clarified his joint vacation with President Uhuru Kenyatta at the coastal city of Mombasa.
Speaking to reporters in Mombasa, the ODM leader said that contrary to speculation by the press and political pundits, the two had no specific agenda but were merely holidaying.
Raila confirmed reports that he met with the President in Mombasa but joked that their meeting was just based on their friendship and that he and the President were just catching up and chatting it up.
"If I and President Uhuru have anything to announce we will announce but for now there is nothing to announce. We met but were just chatting it up...nothing more," said Raila.
Asked about the recent police brutality incidents where two brothers died at the hands of police in Embu, the former Prime Minister sought to distance himself from the matter.
The 2022 Presidential hopeful responded by saying that he was not in government and urged that the relevant investigative bodies be allowed time to carry out their duty without being disrupted by political leaders.
Raila attended a service at the ACK Mombasa Memorial Cathedral on Sunday, August 8. He later urged Kenyans to show up for vaccination, with the country having recently received extra Covid-19 vaccines.
He also urged the government to reopen the economy, championing for Kenyan artists to be allowed to go back to normal and resume work without being restrained by the Covid-19 restrictions in place.
The former PM took a swipe at Deputy President William Ruto for getting involved in the investigative matters of the murder of the two brothers that caused an uproar among residents in Embu county.
The DP had on Friday, August 6, made a phone call to Embu residents who were demonstrating, urging calm and promising to see to it that the family of the victims get justice on the murder of their kin.
According to Jubilee Vice Chairperson David Murathe, the President was on holiday at the coast and had been staying in Mombasa since he jetted back to the country from the United Kingdom.
Murathe revealed on Wednesday, August 4, that President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ODM leader would be holding talks in a meeting in Mombasa County but was tight-lipped about details of the meeting.
