Ousted Nairobi City County Governor, Mike Sonko, now says his reward of Ksh200,000 to whoever offers information that would lead to the arrest of self-confessed serial killer, Masten Wanjala, will go to the group of youth who lynched him.
Sonko, on Wednesday, October 13, announced that he would offer the token as an appreciation to anybody who would give reliable information leading to the capture of Masten who escaped from Jogoo Road Police Station where he was being held.
Masten, who was facing 13 counts of murder, beat the station’s security and vanished into the thin air, only for him to resurface in his rural home of Bungoma county where he was identified and subsequently lynched by the residents.
Sonko now says the Ksh200,000 will be distributed to the mob, adding that it was the right thing for the residents to do.
The proposal by Sonko to offer a cash reward was backed by Kamukunji Member of Parliament, Yusuf Hassan, who stated that police officers at the station should be held accountable for the mysterious disappearance of Masten.
"Yesterday I had too much, so serial killer Masten Wanjala - who brutally murdered 13 children in Nairobi - was lynched by a mob in Bungoma, Kabuchai."
"Since I had offered a reward of Ksh200,000 for the information leading to his arrest, I will now give the money to the group of youth who did this good job," remarked Sonko.
"I'm not doing this as PR (Public Relations) but the Sonko Rescue Team transported the bodies of the murdered children to various destinations for burial and the tears and pain that the parents and families went through was so big and they won't forget.”
He further asked the residents to reach him through their area chief so that he can organise how the money will be sent and distributed.
“Who knows the area chief of Kabuchai? I want to send him the money to give to the boys who did the job.”
At the same time, the three police officers arrested for allegedly assisting Masten escape were released on a Ksh100,000 cash bail on Friday morning.
Magistrate Jane Kamau ordered the three officers to report to the investigating officer daily for the next seven days at 9.30am.
Through their lawyer, Danstan Omari, the officers, Philip Mbithi, Boniface Mutuma, and Precious Mwinzi, defended themselves claiming that lack of electricity at the police cells led to the escape of the prisoner.
