CCTV footage has emerged showing the daring heist carried out at a local bank in Bungoma County whereby at least Ksh25 million had been stolen.
The footage obtained from one of the nearby premises shows an unidentified man, armed with an AK47 rifle, running towards his accomplice.
The man donned a casual look with a black cap, black t-shirt and pants. The duo helped each other to carry the two cases that allegedly had the cash.
Further, police officers reviewing the footage intimated that the two men were muscular for carrying two grey cases at a fast pace.
Eyewitnesses at the scene had intimated to the media that the robbers carried out the heist at 1pm. According to a witness identified as Pauline, the robbers ordered the clientele at the bank to lie on the floor as they accessed the vaults.
"They literally took all the cash boxes and carted them away. They had tried to move them through the teller barrier, but couldn’t. That’s when they resorted to carrying the boxes through the exit. They, thereafter, carried the cash boxes to a waiting vehicle. They were in no hurry,” she told The Standard.
Other witnesses, however, decried the state of insecurity- arguing that police officers took too long to respond.
"Our police officers are complacent. If a crime is taking place in your locality, and you alert them, they take ages to arrive at the scene. I think we need an overhaul of the police officers in Kimilili,” a witness stated.
At the scene, the robbers shot and injured two police officers whereby one was shot on both legs and the other, on the right knee.
"Be informed that today at around 1330 hours at Ushirika bank Kimilili branch armed robbers attacked Cipu Officers from Bungoma South Sub County, who were escorting cash in the local Bank's vehicle."
"The bank manager was shot on the left side of the stomach and the bullet still lodged in," read part of the police report.
