Deputy President William Ruto has accused the government of spending at least Ksh1 billion in an attempt to buy former Jubilee members back to the ruling party.
Addressing a rally in Mombasa on Saturday, March 26, the DP argued that the government was prioritising the wrong matters yet, in some areas, Kenyans were dying of hunger.
"At the time when citizens are dying of hunger in various parts of Kenya, Ksh 1 billion has been released to buy politicians to return to Jubilee. Do these people really understand what going hungry means?
"The biggest shame ever is when a government uses a billion shillings in a month where there are people dying of hunger, to buy politicians instead of food for the people," stated the DP.
His utterances come at a time when drones of politicians have left the ruling party in what they cited as a lack of proper leadership. Many decamped to UDA.
Ruto's sentiments were echoed by his allies including Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki who cautioned civil servants from participating in the embezzlement.
He singled out Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries who he accused of aiding political activities and funding.
"We want to warn the public servants who are being used to siphon public money to use it to buy aspirants everywhere in this country that a public officer who causes the loss of public funds will be held personally responsible whether they are in the office or have left," cautioned Kindiki.
Another Kenya Kwanza principal, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi, while on the campaign trail argued that the state's handling of fertilizer subsidy had led to higher prices.
He noted that the government claimed to redirect the funds to the security docket when in the real sense, the money was moved to Azimio in what he claimed was their attempt to raise campaign funds.
"A bag of fertiliser is between Ksh6,000 and Ksh7,000. MPs of Kenya Kwanza pitched a proposal to have the sale of subsidized fertiliser.
"Uhuru's Government has removed that and said that they are taking the money to security. That money is not being taken to security, it is being taken to supply to the Azimio team so that they can fuel their campaign," he stated.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, on the other hand, explained that he fell out with Ruto after learning that the DP was scheming to topple him before his time.
The Head of State made the revelations in a State House meeting attended by 3,000-odd elders from Kiama Kia Ma, Kikuyu Council of Elders and elected leaders from Mt Kenya region.
