National Assembly speaker, Moses Wetangula, has demanded decorum from MPs affiliated with Azimio and Kenya Kwanza as the battle for the majority in the 13th Parliament intensifies.
While addressing the press on Monday, September 19, Wetangula requested the lawmakers to refer to the legal and parliamentary provisions to solve the supremacy battle.
The speaker further declared that he was available to settle the matter in his capacity impartially if brought to his attention.
“Nothing has come before me yet but when it does, we will give it a reasoned approach and communicate with the parties involved.
"I am sure it is not a difficult issue to decide on. We will look at the law, the Constitution, the standing orders and make a decision," Wetangula reiterated.
Meanwhile, Azimio lawmakers attending the convention insisted on being the majority based on the numbers. Ugunja’s Opiyo Wandayi moved that the speaker ought to keep off the stalemate.
“The question of Azimio being the majority is already settled and anybody who is dissatisfied can only seek redress in court. The is no ruling or determination to be made by the Speaker.
On the flip side, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah opined that the issue of the majority in the August House was yet to be decided, basing his argument on the amendments to the Political Parties Act.
Ichung’wah stated that there was a difference between a coalition party and a coalition of political parties, which eliminates Azimio.
"Therefore, we go back at looking at whether we have a coalition of parties with the highest number of seats. Kenya Kwanza has nearly 190 MPs,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Azimio named Wandayi as its majority leader to be deputised by Kathiani MP, Robert Mbui. Suna East MP, Juna representative was fronted as the majority whip, aided by Nominated MP Sabina Chege.
Across the political divide, Kenya Kwanza nominated Ichung’wah as its leader of the majority and his South Mugirango counterpart Sylvanus Osoro as its majority whip. The two will be deputised by Owen Baya (Kilifi North) and Naomi Wago respectively.
