The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) on Saturday announced the eight-day closure of a section of Mombasa Road which will affect all motorists going from Nairobi to Mombasa and vice versa.

In a public notice, KENHA revealed that the affected road is Mombasa Road (A8), the Mombasa bound lanes at Lake Oil Petrol Station. The road is 4 kilometres and before Malili Town while heading to Mombasa.

Engineer Kung'u Ndung'u, the KENHA Director General, revealed that the closure began on Saturday, June 15, at midnight and the road shall be reopened on Sunday, June 23, at 6 am.

According to KENHA, the closure is to allow highway maintenance works at the section. Only one lane will be closed while the other will remain in operation.

"During the closure of the Nairobi bound lane motorists heading to Nairobi will use the diversion as the Mombasa bound operates normally," read part of the notice.

Additionally, the Mombasa-bound lane is being repaired all motorists heading to Mombasa will be diverted to the Nairobi-bound lane. This will ease the traffic on the busy road.

While the road maintenance is ongoing, KENHA has asked all motorists who intend to use the section to approach the affected area with caution to avoid accidents.

Also, the motorists have been asked to follow the traffic signs and guidance in place as directed by the police and traffic marshalls on site.

"The Authority remains committed to ensuring seamless connectivity to facilitate safe passage for economic prosperity," read part of the notice.

Earlier in the week, a section of Mombasa Road was closed down between June 13 and June 16 as maintenance work commenced.

The affected section was near Katani Road Junction along lanes heading towards Mombasa Road.

This four-day closure was to pave the way for the construction of the mid-span footbridge foundation on the busy highway.
