The family of 24-year-old Sammy Cullen Maina is seeking justice after the police attributed the death of their kin to a hit-and-run.

According to Traffic Commandant Mary Omari, Maina died during a hit-and-run accident along Thika Super Highway.

The police indicated that the incident occurred last month in Kasarani past 10 pm with the vehicle and the driver yet to be traced.

"This accident occurred in June along Thika Super Highway near Carwash. It was around 10:10 pm and it was a hit-and-run," the Commandant told Citizen TV.

It is reported that the body of the 24-year-old was taken to City Mortuary and booked as unknown.

His family only became aware of the discovery of the body on Sunday, July 14 after a section of social media users started sharing the images online. A visit to the mortuary helped the family to positively identify him.

However, following the statement by the police, the family and friends of the 24-year-old have questioned the police's account of events.

They alleged that there were attempts to hide what had happened to the student who went missing after the June 25 protests.

"He was in Nairobi town around Ngara then he left for his house in Kahawa. We observed the body and saw the similarities. We were sure that it was him. He has his leg broken. He did not have a shirt. He was looking bad.

"There are a lot of things that do not make sense. It does not make sense for him to leave Ngara, heading to Kahawa West and stop over at Kasarani as a pedestrian. We were at Kasarani today and the police were not very cooperative. They have not given us the answers," a family member told the press.

Consequently, the family is demanding to be issued with a detailed police report on the accident.

Maina's family is demanding to get a report on the items that were recovered at the accident scene. The family also seeks to get a timeline for the events surrounding the death of the 24-year-old.

Additionally, the family is demanding CCTV footage of traffic along Thika Road to establish what happened that fateful night.

The postmortem of the deceased is set to be conducted in the coming days.
