Wafula Chebukati's daughter, Nekesa Chebukati, has revealed that there was an attempt on the life of the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman during the 2022 general elections.

Speaking during Chebukati's burial on Saturday, March 8, Nekesa said that Chebukati had received intelligence that someone had ordered for him to be killed to block him from announcing the election's results.

Despite the threats, Nekesa asserted that her father did not show any sign of backing down in announcing the results.

"On the day, just a moment before he went to Bomas to announce the results, at that time he had already received intelligence that somebody wanted to end his life to stop him from announcing the results," she stated.

"We sat together, and the pastor prayed, and I hugged my father, and he looked at me, and I looked at him, and I said to him that he doesn't need to explain anything because I knew he would stand with the truth and for Kenyans," she stated

According to Nekesa, Chebukati shed a tear, something that she admits she never saw him do, knowing that that could have been the last meeting he had with his family.

Nekesa handed her father the speech, which she had drafted for him, that he would read after the result announcement and assured him that the family would be by his side in whatever circumstance.

"We looked at each other without really saying much but knowing that that might have been the last time we could have seen each other. I have never seen my dad cry, but that day my dad shed a tear," she said.

After the chaos at Bomas following the results announcement, Nekesa revealed that Chebukati went home bleeding on the leg.

"The speech he gave at Bomas was so impactful that even after he came home he said that he did not remember what he said; he took off his shoes, and he was bleeding, but he even didn't realize he was bleeding; this was just my dad, to get the work done, and he was proud for what he had done in Bomas," she stated.

Wafula Chebukati was appointed as the IEBC Chairman by then-president Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2017 and oversaw both the 2017 and 2022 general elections.

Chebukati lost his life on February 20 after losing the fight to brain cancer.

Eulogizing their father, all three children, Emmanuel, Jonathan, and Nekesa, hailed him as the best father who guided them well during their growing years, promising to pass on the skills they learned from him to future generations.
