Five students from Mbita Boys High School were on Wednesday, April 2, knocked down by a speeding personal car in Mbita town, Homa Bay County, while they were heading home for the April holidays.

Reports suggest that the five students were walking near the Mbita International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) when the car lost control and hit them.

While the victims have been rushed to Homabay County Level 5 Hospital, reports indicate that two of them could have succumbed to the injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the car was moving at high speed, and the driver is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol when he hit the students.

Videos and images shared on social media platforms showed the vehicle severely damaged with a cracked windscreen, damaged side mirrors, and deflated tyres.

The footage also showed a group of residents attempting to rescue the victims while others stood from a distance in dismay to witness the unfolding.

The latest tragedy followed a similar occurrence on Wednesday morning in which more than ten students from Ober Boys Boarding got involved in an accident along the Sondu-Katito highway.

The accident occurred around 6am after a 14-seater matatu that was ferrying pupils towards Kisumu City lost control and rammed into a stalled truck carrying sugarcane.

A police report revealed that four people, including three pupils, succumbed on the spot, while those injured were rushed to the Nyabondo Mission Hospital for treatment.

While confirming the road crash, Nyakach OCPD, Laurinus Odinga, revealed that the accident occurred on a sharp bend and that no signs showed the trailer had been parked along the highway.

Narrating the incident, Odinga noted that two pupils and the conductor succumbed on the spot, while the third pupil died while being rushed to the hospital.

After preliminary investigations, the bodies of the deceased were ferried to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital, awaiting identification and a postmortem.
