Tax filing season is officially here. Millions of Kenyan taxpayers are scrambling to file their returns for the period covering January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. This is ahead of the deadline on Monday, June 30.

The period is marked by chaos and, in typical Kenyan fashion, a last-minute rush to file taxes and avoid penalties. One glaring issue during this time is Kenyans forgetting their passwords as they attempt to log into their iTax accounts.

However, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the country’s primary tax collector, has provided a step-by-step guide on how to reset your iTax password and regain access to your account to ensure a smooth tax-filing process.

By doing so, one will be able to recover their password and file taxes. The deadline to file is Monday, June 30, 2025.

Kenyans seeking to file their returns are to do so through the Authority's iTax portal: iTax.kra.go.ke. Kenyans with no income to declare are required to file a NIL return.

According to KRA, an individual who fails to file their income tax return by June 30 will be fined Ksh2,000 or face a 5 per cent penalty of the total income.

Kenyans who are exempt from income tax are also required to file returns and enter a valid Exemption Certificate Number.

This year, KRA announced an extension to its working hours to allow Kenyans to file their 2024 income tax returns. This was communicated through a notice issued on Tuesday, May 20, with the new directive set to be enforced across all its service centres and Huduma Centres to ensure all Kenyans with KRA PINs file their returns by the June 30 closing date.

In the new schedule, KRA stated that all its official service centres and Huduma Centres in populous regions would be open for 12 continuous hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays.

On Saturdays, only the tax service centres would be operational, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., while Huduma Centres would remain closed on that day. However, on June 28, which falls on a Saturday, the tax service centres would operate from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Huduma Centres would operate during normal working hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but would remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
