Protests have erupted in Embu town following the arrest of Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji on July 7 over Saba Saba Day violence.
The residents are now demanding the immediate release of Mukunji, who was arrested at the height of the Saba Saba Day protests.
In an image seen by Kenyans.co.ke, on Tuesday, July 8, residents blocked roads using stones as they burned tyres, paralysing transport along Embu- Kianjokoma road.
Mukunji was arrested at 3 pm on Monday, during the demonstrations over allegations of inciting violence during the protests.
Police officers were seen at the scene trying to calm the situation as the protests grew more chaotic.
It is also reported that the residents began the demonstration on Monday night demanding the release of the MP.
On July 7, the National Police Service confirmed the arrest of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's ally.
One of Gachagua's lawyers, Ndengwa Njiru, said that Mukunji was apprehended and booked at Kibii Police Station at 3:53 pm via OB number 06/07/07/2025.
Njiru added that the MP was picked by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from Juja Police Station.
“The Officer Commanding Station has confirmed that he only booked him for the exclusive purpose of holding him,” Njiru stated.
On July 8, the advocate revealed that the MP was due to face terrorism charges, apparently in connection with the protests and currently at Kahawa Law Courts.
"Hon Mukunji is currently at Kahawa Law Courts. He is expected to face charges of terrorism."
“I am briefed that the police officers are planning to plant drugs and explosives in his car that is currently parked at Kibii Police station,” Njiru further noted.
