Two people have been confirmed dead and one injured after a lorry was involved in a tragic accident along the Bomet-Kaplong Highway.
In a statement on its official X account on Sunday, August 17, the Motorists Association of Kenya said that the lorry plunged into the Nzoia River on Sunday morning.
"Soymet Bridge, Bomet, 2 dead, 1 rushed to the hospital after a lorry plunged into the river this Sunday morning," MAK stated.
According to reports, the survivor has been rushed to the Kaplong Hospital for medical attention.
According to photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke. Emergency responders and residents had already arrived at the scene to conduct rescue efforts.
In the past 24 hours, four people have lost their lives and four have been injured in accidents. On Saturday, August 16, two people lost their lives and three others were injured along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The accident occurred after a trailer rammed into an oncoming pick-up truck before crashing into another lorry travelling in the same direction at Kwa Mautiiyo in Malii.
According to Athi River South Sub-County Police Commander David Kandie, the accident occurred at around 7:30am and killed the two on the spot.
According to Kandie, the victims included a driver from one of the trailers and a 25-year-old man who was seated at the back of the pickup.
On the other hand, the three injured victims were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they are recuperating after receiving treatment.
The accidents add to the number of road accidents that have occurred. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), a total of 2,933 fatalities were reported between January and August 10 this year.
Acknowledging the recent surge in road accidents across the country, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, in a statement on Monday, August 12, said that the government has already dispatched a team that will scrutinise accident-prone areas.
According to the CS, the team will be required to complete the investigations within seven days and submit a technical recommendation that will help in curbing accidents.
Chirchir further encouraged all transport stakeholders and road users to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to traffic laws to reverse the recent worrying trend, which he described as highly preventable.
"As a ministry, we will continue working with all stakeholders to implement both long- and medium-term measures outlined in Kenya's National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028, within the available resources," the CS stated.
