Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has threatened to impeach the Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, following remarks he made over the weekend targeting the Mount Kenya region.
In a statement on Monday, August 18, the senator relayed that Duale's remarks, which alluded that the Mount Kenya region saw itself as a superior community, were tribal and divisive.
As such, he affirmed that only a politician, not a cabinet secretary, would get away with such remarks; thus, an impeachment might be the solution to the matter.
"Hon Duale, you’re a Cabinet Secretary, a policymaker, not a tribal politician. This weekend’s shareholding talk is pure poison, dragging Kenya back to the dark days of 2007 and spreading fear. We impeached DP Gachagua for the same divisive nonsense," he stated.
"I honestly wonder what our problem is as a country, just when we start making progress uniting Kenyans, people like Duale pull us backwards. If you think you’re above the law, think again. It’s clear: impeachment may be the only way to remind you that government belongs to ALL Kenyans, not your sub-tribe. Enough of this tribal madness!"
While speaking on Saturday, August 16, in Balambala, Garissa County, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale declared that there is no superior community in Kenya, stressing that the Constitution guarantees equality for all.
"There is no superior community, region, or religion here in Kenya the Constitution provides. President William Ruto is becoming a victim of these political shenanigans because he wants to unite the people of Kenya,” said Duale.
He further alleged that President Ruto was being unfairly targeted for his efforts to foster national unity, a claim that drew sharp reactions.
In a social media post on Sunday, Ruto's former senior economic adviser, Moses Kuria, also slammed the CS over the remarks, accusing him of profiling the central region.
Kuria also called out Tiaty MP William Kamket and Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, alongside Duale, for the superiority complex remarks, relaying that although some of the Mount Kenya leaders were not perpetuating tribal politics, they were being lumped together.
"In the recent past, I have listened to a number of leaders allege that there is a community that thinks it's superior to others. From Kamket to Mandago to Aden Duale in Balambala today," Kuria stated.
"Some of us have unapologetically said NO to returning this country to the politics of negative ethnicity. Equally, we will vehemently resist Wholesale condemnation and collective punishment of an entire community," he added.
