The Senate has announced plans to sanction two Governors accused of repeatedly defying summons to appear before the Accounts Committee to respond to audit queries.
Kericho Governor Erick Mutai and his Isiolo Counterpart Abdi Guyo are on the spot for allegedly skipping summons to address queries raised in the Auditor General's report.
The lawmakers accused the two governors of repeatedly absconding from the summons despite warnings and penalties, with the Senators now mulling severe disciplinary measures against the two county leaders.
Speaking during a meeting on Friday, November 21, Committee Chairperson Moses Kajwang said that the sittings will run through to late December, adding that the two governors now risk sanctions for contempt of parliament.
The Senators reiterated that a Governor can only be permitted to skip the summons if the reasons given are credible and justifiable, accusing some county leaders of skipping the summons over petty issues.
"This mischief where a governor thinks that they can just wake up in the morning and decide they are not appearing, we must ensure that every governor invited to appear here must do so," Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua said.
"We must do what we must do to ensure that we finish with the audits for the financial year under review before December 31, 2025," he added.
During the committee meeting, Senator Kajwang warned Governors who are yet to appear before it to prepare since the summons is expected to last until the end of the year.
This comes after Kericho Governor submitted a letter on Friday morning calling for the postponement of the summons due to unavoidable issues.
Similarly, Governor Guyo submitted a letter dated November 19, this year, asking for the hearing to be moved to a different date.
The two governors have been on the spot in recent months following their botched impeachments. For instance, Guyo has faced fierce political opposition from Isiolo Members of the County Assembly (MCA).
Governor Guyo was in June this year impeached by Isiolo County Assembly over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office. However, the High Court nullified the impeachment.
Likewise, Governor Erick Mutahi has survived two impeachment attempts by the County Assembly, most recently in late August 2025, after the Senate dismissed the motions for failing to meet the required two-thirds threshold of votes.
