Former Chief Justice David Maraga accused President William Ruto of driving up the national debt while offering little to show for years of heavy borrowing on Monday 24 2025.

Maraga stated in an X post that Kenyans are struggling while being told the economy is improving.

He questioned the President’s fiscal management. He warned that taxpayers are carrying the burden of decisions they had no say in.

Maraga said the country has borrowed at least 40% of its national budget since President William Ruto took office.

He noted that the national debt has risen from Ksh8.6 trillion to Ksh12 trillion in three years. He argued that the rapid growth of debt leaves future generations vulnerable.

Maraga also dismissed claims that Kenya’s economy is stabilizing.

He cited official communication from the administration claiming foreign reserves now stand at USD 12 billion.

He stressed that despite the reported reserves, ordinary Kenyans are not feeling any relief.

Maraga framed the issue as one of honesty and accountability. He said Kenyans deserve leaders who invest resources locally to create jobs and opportunities.

“We can continue pretending that President Ruto understands our struggles. Or we can choose an honest leadership that treats every tax shilling as if it’s the last we have,” stated Maraga

Maraga, who is a 2027 presidential hopeful under the United Green Movement continues to position himself as a people-focused candidate. He has embraced public crowdfunding as part of his political strategy.

He urged citizens to demand leadership that respects public money.
