National Assembly Deputy Minority Whip Robert Mbui has admitted to breaking parliamentary rules when he removed the National Assembly mace during a sitting on November 13, 2025, an incident which resulted in his 5-day suspension from the house.
The Parliamentarian made this confession when he appeared on a Citizen TV interview on November 25, 2025, where he explained his side of the story of the parliamentary drama that made headlines.
Mbui claimed to have requested to rise on a point of order to inform the Speaker that the house did not have quorum. The MP said that his request was ignored by the Speaker, prompting him to break the law to get the attention of the House Speaker.
The Kathiani Member of Parliament admitted to having removed the mace from its position at the floor of the National Assembly but clarified that he did not get out of Parliament with the mace.
"I stood on a point of order and insisted that I get the attention of the Speaker, and just because I am in the minority, she chose to ignore me. I stood up, broke the law, and shouted, and she continued to ignore me. I took the mace but did not get out of the house with it," the MP revealed.
The Deputy National Assembly Speaker, Gladys Boss Shollei, who was presiding as the House Speaker during the incident, was also part of the panel in the interview at the television station.
Shollei defended her decision, saying she did not see the Kathiani Member of Parliament rising on a point of order.
"The only time I saw Mbui is when he went to pick the mace; he carried the mace three metres from where it normally sits," the Deputy Speaker revealed.
The Deputy Speaker further revealed to have given Mbui a minimal punishment of 5 days instead of 28 days because Mbui was a normally behaved member.
Robert Mbui has revealed that he has written to the National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, explaining himself on the incident. He says he told the Speaker that the punishment was unfair, claiming that he behaved in the manner because of the misconduct of the Deputy Speaker.
The Deputy Minority Whip is expected to return to the National Assembly after the 5-day suspension ended.
