Senator Johnson Sakaja Questions ICC Claim That They Would Revive Collapsed Cases Against President Uhuru Kenyatta

Jubilee Senate aspirant Johnson Sakaja has questioned the timing of the International Criminal Court’s utterance that they would revive the collapsed cases against President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.

Speaking on Sunday, Senator Sakaja alleged that the remarks attributed to ICC Senior Trial Attorney Anton Steynberg amounted to political interference ahead of the August 8 polls.

Sakaja claimed that the ICC was interested in a regime change in Kenya that would help them return the cases to the court, urging the Hague-based court to let Kenyans decide who they want as their next leaders

“They are just playing games with African leaders…that is what they are doing. And that regime change they think they are going to get by getting Raila’s government in power will never happen…because it is never going to happen,” said Sakaja

He added that President Kenyatta and Ruto had been vindicated by the court after the prosecutors failed to present a formidable case against the two.

“They didn’t have a formidable case against them but they now want a government that will help them to return the ICC case. Are they interested in regime change or justice?” posed Sakaja.

The legislator warned that if the ICC went ahead to revive the cases, Kenya would once again mobilise African countries to walk out of the court.

“Kenyans should remember who the owners of ICC are. They should stop wasting our time and Kenyans should remember who the owners of ICC are,” he added.

Attorney Steynberg had last week been quoted by a local daily stating that he hoped the cases would be revived.

The Trial Attorney had reportedly stated that the cases were weakened and regretted that they collapsed, but hoped that the next regime would be much more cooperative.
