Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi Causes Division After Suspending County Officials

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi is said to be causing tension in a section of area residents over the radical decisions he has taken since being sworn-in.

Immediately after being inaugurated a week ago, Murungi swang into action and suspended all County Executive Committee (CEC) members, the County Secretary, Sub-county and Ward representatives.

The decision has, however, angered some of the residents who have accused the Governor of trying to instil fear and intimidate officers who opposed him during the elections.

According to some, Murungi suspended the senior officials to create positions to reward his campaigners or die-hard supporters.

They further cautioned that the Governor could be faced with several suits in case the suspended officials had permanent contracts.

“Kiraitu will have to deal with unending court cases if county staff on contract or permanent is sent on leave. Nevertheless, let them be given time,” one of the residents was quoted by the Star.

However, others supported the first-time governor noting that the move would help in improving service delivery in the County in accordance with his manifesto.

They affirmed that the suspensions were a way of cleaning up and ensuring that he fixes the sectors which were not looked into during former governor Peter Munya's tenure.
