277 Election Petitions Filed Challenging August 8 Victories

Newly-elected leaders are at risk of losing their seats after 277 petition cases were filed challenging their victories during the August elections.

The figures represent a 67% rise in the cases as compared to the 188 petitions filed after the 2013 General Election.

As the election-petition window closed on 8th September, 31 out of 47 Governorship victories were being challenged.

This comes after, Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua requested the court to cancel the entire August 8 General Election.

In a case filed at the Kirinyaga High Court, Karua argued that the Supreme Court's decision to nullify the presidential election meant the whole process was flawed.

She maintained that the election was conducted as one entity, therefore, the nullification of the presidential one meant that results for the other five positions should also be cancelled.

Last week, the former gubernatorial candidate took to the court to challenge the election of Anne Waiguru as Kirinyaga Governor.
