Doctors Send Message to Wafula Chebukati

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has spoken out on the political situation in the country as the October 26 repeat Presidential election fast approaches.

Acknowledging the stalemate that has seen the National Super Alliance (NASA) declare there will be no election, the doctors have called for dialogue involving key political players and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The Union's Secretary-General Ouma Oluga raised concerns on the safety of the public and election officials, stating: "We fear for the safety and lives of election staff who will manage the polling stations and voters who may turn up, should the election go ahead."

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, North Rift Branch Secretary Dr. Ishmael Ayabei noted that their call was primarily for national dialogue, promising that a comprehensive statement would be issued by the union.

He stated: "There is need to have dialogue involving everyone so as to move forward together...We still have three days to the election."

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday afternoon held a meeting at Harambee House with IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati. Mr Kenyatta had previously maintained that he had "nothing to discuss" with Mr Chebukati.

“We made clear that we have no demands or conditions on this subject. We have made funds available for the IEBC to do its job. Now they really should deliver,” he stated.

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga has reiterated that only cosmetic changes have been made at the electoral body following the Supreme Court ruling that nullified the August 8 election.

Speaking in Kisii, the former Prime Minister maintained that there would be no election unless their 'Irreducible Minimum' conditions were met.

He stated that former Commissioner Dr Roselyne Akombe had confirmed their claims on the electoral body and praised her for her bravery, even when faced with death threats.
