Kenya's Trending Topics on 8th November 2017

Kenyans were on Wednesday involved in a number of discussions that majorly focussed on three National Super Alliance (NASA) Members of Parliament (MPs).

Under the topics Millie Odhiambo, John Mbadi, Tom Odege and NASA MPs, social media users discussed a statement delivered by the MPs declaring that President Uhuru Kenyatta had failed to protect Nyanza fishermen who had allegedly been arrested by the Ugandan government.

Of particular interest to the commentators was the fact that the MPs seemingly acknowledged the Presidency under President Kenyatta, contrary to their declaration that they will not recognize "an illegitimate government."

#280characters

The hashtag trended worldwide after Twitter rolled out the new 280 character limit for tweets, double from the 140 characters that "tweeps" had become accustomed to.

The new development came after Twitter tested the 280 characters with a select number of handles in September.

"Looking at all the data, we’re excited to share we’ve achieved this goal and are rolling the change out to all languages where cramming was an issue.

"Only five per cent of Tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only two per cent were over 190 characters. As a result, your timeline reading experience should not substantially change, you’ll still see about the same amount of Tweets in your timeline," the company stated on their official blog.
