Conflict Emerges Over DP Ruto’s 2022 Running Mate

A conflict has emerged after a section of Meru leaders, led by North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood, urged DP William Ruto to pick Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi to be his running mate in the 2022 presidential race.

This comes barely two days after GEMA leaders, including those from the Meru region, pleaded with the DP to pick CS Mwangi Kiunjuri to deputise him.

Speaking on Monday in Meru, Dawood vouched for Kiraitu stating that he was a development-oriented leader and his ability was recognised by many people in Meru land and Kenya.

“Meru residents will be glad and grateful if the Mt Kenya leaders and residents rally their support behind Kiraitu,” Dawood stated.

“When DP Ruto will be seeking the Presidency in 2022, we want you [Kiraitu] to deputise him,” he added.

GEMA Organising Secretary, Paul Kinyanjui Mwangi, had earlier endorsed CS Kiunjuri as the most qualified candidate for the position.

"He has also proved to be an effective servant of the people, considering how he has performed since he joined the cabinet," Mr Kinyanjui stated.

He maintained that Kiunjuri was the senior most politician from Mt Kenya region capable of taking over the leadership mantle in the region.

Kinyanjui further argued that CS Kiunjuri had represented the interest of the GEMA community in an admirable manner.

"We are asking Ruto that God-willing in 2022, he should consider Kiunjuri as a possible running mate," the Secretary remarked.
