MP Nixon Korir Breaks Silence on Election Nullification

Lang'ata Member of Parliament Nixon Korir has dismissed reports that his win in the August General Election has been nullified by the court.

News of the alleged nullification went viral on social media on Tuesday evening.

Through his Twitter account, the MP stated that those were fake news and the people of Lang'ata already made their decision adding that the next election will be August 9, 2022.

However, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Oscar Omoke, is in court seeking to have the August 8 results overturned on claims that the exercise was marred with irregularities that could have influenced the outcome.

Omoke lost the election after garnering 39,593 votes to Korir’s 41,086 votes.

The results were announced amid reinforced security after ODM agents threatened to disrupt the exercise.

When he testified before Lady Justice Lucy Njuguna, Mr Korir, who was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket, insisted he was duly declared the winner by the IEBC as the body conducted the exercise under strict adherence of the law.

Senate Majority Leader, Kipchumba Murkomen, on Tuesday evening posted a photo of an unperturbed Korir having tea in his office with him alongside Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, Nominated Elgeyo Marakwet MCA Kibire Lawi and Baringo politician Reuben Kiborek.

“Fake news is that court has ruled against Nixon Korir. It’s wishful thinking,” he tweeted.

The post was accompanied by the photos taken in Murkomen’s Senate office.

Before joining politics, Korir served a Secretary Youth Affairs under the executive office of the President where he oversaw, among others, the Uwezo Fund, Youth Enterprise Development Fund, the National Youth Service and the Kenya National Volunteers Programme.

He is a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto.

Korir was the founding Chairman of the United Republican Party and also served as the Executive Director of the party’s secretariat.

In the March 4, 2013 General Election, he vied for the Lang’ata MP’s seat on a URP ticket and finished second with 17,740 votes. Joash Olum of ODM won the seat after scooping 25,394 votes.

Korir is the first person from the Kalenjin community to be elected as a Member of Parliament in Nairobi County.
