North Rift MPs Demand Extension of SGR

A section of Members of Parliament (MPs) from North Rift led by Moiben MP Silas Tiren and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi have demanded the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Malaba through Eldoret.

The legislators want the railway extended to reduce cargo and passenger transport by road and also reduce the number of accidents along the Nairobi-Eldoret highway.

Mr Tiren and Mr Sudi further called on the government led by President Uhuru Kenyatta to set up measures to control road carnage without sabotaging the public and economy.

Their sentiments were echoed by Muslim ministers and Imams led by Abubakar Bini who suggested that Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) should be allowed to operate for more hours during the day.

They made this statement following the transport snarl up that ensued in the region following the NTSA night travel ban.

Uasin Gishu County boss Jackson Mandago on his part announced that the construction of the Sh5.1 Billion Southern Bypass would start this month to ease congestion within Eldoret.

"This is a long-awaited project, we are happy it will be done soon so we can decongest Eldoret town," Mandago stated.

Mr Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto commissioned the project during the August election campaigns.

The road will run from Ngeria along the Eldoret-Nairobi road through the southern parts of the town near Kapseret area before rejoining the Eldoret-Bungoma Highway at Jua Kali.
