Kenyans were on Friday engaged in heated discussions on social media platforms following news that the Kenya Power Corporation would be increasing charges on electricity bills.

Under the topic "Kenya Power", discussions took an accusatory tone after activist Boniface Mwangi shared an article outlining that former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta is an alleged majority shareholder in the electricity company.

Deputy President William Ruto was also said to be the owner of the company that supplies concrete poles to Kenya Power.

On Thursday, Kenya Power announced that electricity consumers would have to pay for backdated bills to recover Sh8.1 Billion that wasn't charged during the 2017 election period.

The Corporation explained that the costs apply to diesel generators that were used in the year as the government sought to cap utility costs for Kenyans.

"There were delayed fuel cost recoveries for the year ended June 2017 (partial fuel cost recovery) in support of the government’s goal of stabilising electricity costs.

"Part of the Sh3.7 Billion incurred in June 2017 was recovered in July 2017 (Sh2 Billion). However, delays in recovery of fuel cost continued until October 2017. Recovery of the accumulated amounts commenced in November 2017 and is expected to continue until full recovery," a statement from Kenya Power explained.
