Why Taxi Drivers Angered Matiang'i at JKIA

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i was on Wednesday angered by taxi drivers and tour operators at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

While on an impromptu visit to the airport to assess the security situation, Matiang'i was left unimpressed by how the taxi drivers and tour operators were calling out and competing for customers.

He instructed the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to develop and enforce stringent regulations to control such operations.

“I’m very impressed by the work of Kenya Airports Authority and the police but there is room for improvement.

"We must make tough decisions to ensure there is maximum order at the airport,” Matiang'i stated.

Matiang'i was accompanied on the early morning visit by Tourism CS Najib Balala and Transport CS James Macharia.

They hailed the importance of JKIA as a regional hub and pledged to ensure it was improved to meet world-class standards.

Balala announced that all civil servants working at the airport would undergo mandatory customer care training.

“Within 100 days we shall disrupt whatever is not in order. We have appointed Utalii College to train all public servants here on customer care so that travellers are treated well from the moment they arrive until they leave,” he affirmed.

The Government move comes after JKIA achieved Category 1 status, with a date set for the maiden Nairobi-New York direct flight.
