  • Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe has resigned.

Through a statement on his Twitter account, the Nairobi Deputy Governor stated that he had failed to earn the trust of Governor Mike Sonko.

"Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1 pm on 31st Jan 2018. I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive admin and management of the county.

"Without fear, favor or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians and my family. Thank you for the encouraging support given to me so far," he tweeted on Friday.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Mr Igathe thanked the Governor for giving him the opportunity to serve the people of Nairobi.

" Serving Kenyans, in Nairobi under your leadership, has been a high honor and distinct privilege. I am grateful to Nairobians and yourself for giving me the opportunity to serve. Thank you, and please accept my highest personal regards," the statement read in part.

Earlier on Friday, the Deputy Governor appeared during an interview on NTV where he defended the Governor's plan for the county.

During the interview, the Deputy Governor stated that transformation in the county would be driven by people with imagination, not memory and would include consultation with the residents.

"I want to assure people out there that the Governor is focused because his first promise was a clean and bright Nairobi," he maintained.

Prior to his resignation, there had been reports of a fall-out between the Jubilee duo with both denying claims of discord in their administration.

In a tweet, the Deputy Governor noted that their main aim as the new administration was to focus and ensure that better service delivery is achieved.

Mr Igathe further noted that for now, the City residents should watch and support the administration then judge them later based on the results achieved.
