Education CS Fred Matiang'i Splashes Sh100 Million on Girls' School

Acting Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has issued a Sh100 Million grant to the Mama Ngina Girls' Secondary School in Mombasa to cater for the relocation of the school.

Speaking on Wednesday, CS Matiang'i outlined that the Sh100 Million would be used to shift the congested school from Kizingo to a 10-acre piece of land in Shimo La Tewa.

Dr Matiang'i conveyed that the government had already demarcated the parcel of land promising that the students would be moved at the beginning of the next year.

"By January of 2019, we shall start moving some of you [to the new facility)," Dr Matiang'i stated.

He added that President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed the school that currently has a student population of 700 to accommodate both day scholars and boarding students.

"The plan the President has is that in the new site, we should build a huge facility that will accommodate more girls," Dr Matiang'i reported.

The Interior CS added that the government will pay the registration fees for all 2018 Form Four candidates from the school.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang followed up the award with an official letter cautioning the school's management not to mismanage the funds.

"You are however instructed to ensure that government procurement procedures are strictly adhered to," the letter read in part.

Speaking to journalists, Dr Matiang'i revealed that the Jubilee administration had released the fund after appeals by Coast leaders. He stated: "They wanted a bigger school and more resources allocated to the students."
