Kenyans were on Monday astonished after an exposé revealed that students of Kwirenyi Secondary School, Kakamega County, are forced to swim in crocodile-infested River Yala for lack of a school swimming pool.

According to the Citizen TV report, the school's swimming team has won trophies in regional competitions as a result of training at the Yala River.

Swimming coach Edward Isoso told reporters that students joining the team often come in already knowing how to swim because of recreational activities at the River.

Under the topic River Yala, comments from those unaware of the report sought clarification while others shared unrelated views using the trending topic.

#BabuOwino

Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, became a trending hashtag on Monday after Magistrate Martha Mutuku issued an arrest warrant for the legislator and his bodyguard Fanuel Owino.

The Magistrate gave the orders after the two failed to appear in court for the mention of their assault case.

On Friday, the legislator advised the police to only arrest him on weekdays and if they must take him in on a weekend, then they should construct a cell in his house where he would be sleeping whenever the government is offended by his actions.

The warrant was later revoked after the two appeared in court and excused themselves explaining that they had been held up in another courtroom.

#NotInMyCountryKE

On Monday, activists launched the hashtag in connection with protests organised against the media shutdown that entered its seventh day under Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi's order.

The protesters marched to Harambee House where the Interior Ministry is housed but were lobbed with teargas by police officers.

Speaking during the protests, Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) Executive Director George Kegoro termed the shutdown as a disregard for the law.
