Trailer Bursts Into Flames on Busy Highway

A trailer burst into flames on the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway on Sunday morning after a mechanical problem.

Luckily, the 3 am incident near Gilgil weighbridge did not claim any lives as the three passengers who were in the trailer managed to escape in time.

An eyewitness confirmed the same stating that the fire started from the trailer's engine and spread fast.

“All the three passengers managed to escape before the lorry was burnt down but the cargo was left intact following the incident,” he added.

In a separate incident, at least 70 families were on Friday night left homeless after their homes were destroyed in a fire at Raila Village, Mugumoini Ward, Lang'ata.

According to Lang'ata Member of Parliament, Nixon Korir, there were no casualties in the incident.

"The firefighters arrived here in less than 20 minutes and were very swift to put out the fire. It would have been very bad,” Mr Korir stated while at the scene of the fire.

The lawmaker blamed the lack of access to the slums as an obstacle to the firefighters from Nairobi County who arrived with two fire engines and an ambulance for those injured.

According to reports, the fire was caused by an electrical fault on one of the power lines in the densely populated informal settlement.

“Moving forward we need to decentralize such equipment so that each constituency has a fire engine, water boozer, and an ambulance,” commented Mr Korir.
