Government Withdraws Wafula Chebukati's Security Detail

Security detail attached to Chairman Wafula Chebukati and two other commissioners have been withdrawn, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reported on Tuesday.

Communications Manager at the electoral body, Mr Andrew Limo, outlined that the security personnel including armed drivers were taken away from the chairman, commissioner Boya Molu and Prof Ayub Guliye on Tuesday morning.

"The withdrawal of security is likely to expose the Chairman and the Commissioners at risk.

"The action undermines the effectiveness in executing the work of the Commission," the statement read in part.

The statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke detailed that the government was responsible and the matter was being pursued.

"The commission has written to the Inspector General (IG) seeking for an understanding of the circumstances leading to this action," Mr Limo noted.

The security withdrawal came a day after three IEBC commissioners - Consolata Maina, Margaret Mwachanya and Amb. (Dr) Paul Kurgat - resigned from the commission.

Chebukati further directed the three to surrender assets that belong to the electoral body that may have been still in their possession.

State House has since announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta was yet to receive the resignation letters from the three even as various stakeholders added their voices to the call for Mr Chebukati and the two remaining commissioners to resign.

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale also conveyed that Parliament had already set in motion a plan to have the three commissioners exit from IEBC and a fresh team appointed.
