Policeman Killed During Carjacking Along Thika Road

A policeman was on Friday night shot dead when a Neo Kenya Mpya bus he was travelling in was hijacked along Thika Road.

Investigations into the incident are underway with the Police taking the driver and conductor of the bus in for questioning.

The thugs are reported to have frisked the passengers and upon learning, he had a gun, stabbed him and took his firearm.

“The gang stole from the other passengers before escaping on foot,” a police report read in part.

According to witnesses, the officer was not able to act fast to defend himself and other passengers.

Earlier reports indicated that the policeman was Ex-IEBC Commissioner Paul Kurgat's bodyguard, a claim which Kenyans.co.ke has established to be false.

When contacted, the former IEBC official stated that he informed of the incident clarifying that: "First of all, I resigned and I do not have any bodyguard at the moment.

"The officer who was killed was called Martin Korir while my former bodyguard who was attached to the Recce squad is Jacob Korir whom I have talked to this morning," he told Kenyans.co.ke on the phone.

IEBC's Communications Manager Andrew Limo confirmed the same: "It is not true. His former bodyguard has a similar surname. Whoever was killed is not known to Dr. Kurgat."

There has been a worrying trend of how police officers have been losing their lives over the past months in various parts of the country.

Earlier in the month, a Naivasha based traffic police officer was hit and killed by a speeding motorist along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Similarly, three police officers were killed and several others were injured on Wednesday night while tracking stolen goats in Samburu.

Reports indicate that the incident took place at Archers Post on the Samburu-Isiolo–Laikipia border and was carried out by suspected cattle rustlers.

In January, five police officers were killed in an attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

The attack took place on the Elwak-Kotulo road in Mandera and with reports that the attackers also burnt a police lorry.
