CS Margaret Kobia Suspends All Payments by Ministry Following Graft Claims

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Margaret Kobia on Thursday revealed that she was not aware of the graft allegations and only heard of it from recent media reports.

Speaking before the Labour Committee, Kobia and her Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rachel Shebesh defended themselves against the latest corruption claims at the National Youth Service.

Kobia further divulged that NYS has halted all payments in the wake of reports of non-existent companies and suppliers.

Her declaration was approved by the committee who had directed the ministry to suspend all transactions until the allegations of the graft at NYS are cleared.

Additionally, she noted that her ministry has unpaid bills from 2008 that amount to Ksh9.8 billion.

When requested to produce the list of companies that the ministry claims to be owing money, Prof.Kobia had no response only indicating that she would organise for it to be brought before the meeting was concluded.

The House Team also queried why NYS is currently offering public transport services through its buses without signing any formal agreement with the Nairobi Couty Government.

According to the lawmakers, the buses that are worth an estimated Ksh500million, are a waste of taxpayers money because of the service is not their the mandate.

At least 3 senior government officials are set to be questioned by Members of Parliament over the new corruption scandal at the NYS.

They are expected to appear before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chaired by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi.

Those lined up for interrogation include Public Service Principal Secretary Lilian Mbogo, NYS Director General Richard Ndubai, and Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki.
