CS Amina Mohamed Takes Action Following School Fires

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed on Tuesday announced a raft of new measures to be taken following a series of school fires that have been reported in recent weeks.

Amina, on Thursday, ordered all Principals, Deputy Principals and Boarding Masters/Mistresses in the country to stay within their school compounds to monitor the safety of students.

“The move aims to allow the school heads to attend to students’ concerns and tighten management,” she noted in a statement.

She suspended all meetings planned by principals for the remainder of the second term.

The CS further directed all teachers who are currently on leave to return to their schools immediately.

This is meant to ensure students are properly supervised as some of them are accused of orchestrating arson attacks.

In addition, Amina instructed school boards of management to assess the discipline and security situation in their institutions within the next seven days.

School heads were given a May 31 deadline to present their reports to the ministry.

Regional Coordinators of Education (RCEs) and Country Directors of Education (CDEs) were also directed to recall all administrators who are on leave to monitor the situation in schools.

”Field officers, including Quality Assurance and Standards Officers, must step up school inspection and assessments to ensure adequate feedback geared towards forestalling insecurity situations in schools,” the statement read in part.

At least 10 school fires have been reported since the beginning of the second term of the academic year.
