Voter Asks Court to Block Miguna Miguna's Nomination

A plan is underway to block politician and lawyer Miguna Miguna's nomination as the Nairobi Deputy Governor.

On Tuesday, John Waigi Migwi moved to court seeking orders to block Miguna’s nomination.

The petitioner argued that Miguna should not be appointed to the post because he is neither a Kenyan nor a member of the Jubilee Party.

Jubilee Party Vice Chairman David Murathe had also protested the nomination noting it could lead to Governor Mike Sonko’s impeachment.

Sonko, however, defended Miguna’s nomination noting the lawyer is the best candidate due to his strong stand against corruption and cartels at City Hall.

He stated that the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga was the reason behind the nomination, describing the lawyer as a Kenyan who can effectively fight cartels.

Senator Johnson Sakaja initially was categorical that there is no way Miguna, a former Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant – who vied for the seat as an independent candidate – would be the next Deputy Governor, but later changed his view stating that Sonko was free to nominate whoever he chooses.

County Assembly of Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi stated that she would present the letter nominating Miguna as the deputy governor to the House for debate.

Elachi further called on President Kenyatta to help resolve the stand-off between Governor Sonko and his critics, most of whom are alleged to be from State House.

She had objected to Miguna's nomination on grounds the letter nominating him was not procedurally presented to her adding that she was concerned about doubts surrounding his Kenyan citizenship.
