3 Bridges Destroyed in Kwale County, 1 Bridge Destroyed in Mombasa County Following Heavy Rains

Four bridges have so far been destroyed at the Kenyan coast following heavy rains.

The Ramisi, Perani and Kanana bridges located along Marere-Lunga Lunga road in Kwale County were fully submerged by floods on Tuesday forcing motorists to use alternative routes.

On Monday the Mbogololo bridge located along Mombasa-Malindi highway in Mombasa County was swept by heavy rains.

The bridge was submerged by the water flowing below it halting passage of vehicles on the highway.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) officials suspended ferry operations at Likoni and the newly-launched Mtongwe Channels following an overflow of water leaving dozens of people stranded in Mombasa.

Responding to the situation, Governor Hassan Joho ordered residents of Runyu slums to be evacuated and moved to safer grounds.

87 children were also rescued from Kisauni orphanage over the floods.

The heavy rains pounding the region have continued to wreck havoc and have so far claimed the lives of nine people including a mother and her four children.
