NYS Recruits' Odi Dance Goes Viral Amidst Sh9B Corruption Scandal

Amidst a Sh9 billion corruption scandal that has captured national attention, a video of unfazed National Youth Service (NYS) servicemen and women dancing has gone viral.

The recruits are seen skilfully dancing the popular Odi dance while a deejay hypes them up and Kenyans were quick to make all sorts of jokes, with some fearing that the government was deliberately keeping them distracted with parties.

Others opted to congratulate the recruits for being able to happily dance in spite of billions meant for their training and resources being looted from public coffers.

Kenyans sought to outdo each other with witty captions as the video was circulated widely on multiple social media platforms.

The recruits are among 13,758 youth currently enrolled in the NYS as servicemen undergoing rigorous paramilitary, technical and vocational training.

In line with the Vision 2030, the NYS offers trainees technical and vocational programmes at its training institutions.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, prior to the emergence of the latest scandal, had heeded the recruits' calls for an increase in their monthly stipend announcing that they would be paid Sh2,100 up from Sh700.

He further ordered the National Police Service and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to absorb NYS graduates during their annual recruitments

The current scandal has so far seen the arrest of, among others, Youth Principal Secretary Lilian Mbogo Omollo and former NYS Director-General Richard Ndubai.

President Kenyatta on Wednesday announced that Machakos County Commissioner Matilda Sakwa would take over as NYS Director-General in an acting capacity.

Reacting to her appointment, Sakwa vowed to restore credibility in the institution.

“It’s morally wrong when you betray the trust given to lead an organisation that brings hope to the youth. I thank the government for entrusting me with the assignment,” she stated.

Here are more hilarious reactions from Kenyans on the video:
